Shortly after first arriving in Texas many years ago, I remember driving over a rise and seeing a vast sea of beautiful bluebonnets spilling over a soft, rolling hill. Sprinkled in and among this low, smoky-blue, refined floral orchestra were splashes of high notes in the bright, wild, red-orange paintbrushes. The visual symphony of it all took my breath away.
Painting on the surface of an unplayable violin has been fun and challenging. With the seemingly endless, drizzly, damp days of January, the oil paints were taking a frustratingly long time to dry. Rather than wait for the front painting to dry then paint the back, which would have exceeded the deadline for completion; I finished the back painting in acrylic paints. As an expressive interpretive artist, conveying the mood and feeling of encountering Texas bluebonnets for the first time has been the inspiration for “Bluebonnet Sonnet.” It is my hope that everyone enjoys this simple piece of visual art and that it helps further the artistic goals of the musical students at Seven Lakes High School.
